Planet Formation
Billions of years ago the particles in our solar system accreted into planetesimals with diameters of a few metres. The planetesimals then collided and formed protoplanets characterized by a period of intense meteorite impacts. In this way planets are formed. It is believed a Mars sized planet later hit the Earth, the result ejecta creating our present day moon.
